Compassionate end-of-life care in the comfort of your own home
This is one of the last pictures we took of Yara, the shelter dog we rescued when we were still in school, and our two boys back in 2019. Weeks after it was taken, we made the hard decision to say goodbye. Because I am a vet, we got to do this in the peace and quiet of our own home. No final trip to a clinic.
The goal of Setting Sun Veterinary Service is to provide you and your companion with the same dignity, privacy, and peace we had with Yara.
Serving Western Wisconsin, including La Crosse, Eau Claire, and the surrounding areas.

We'll talk through your pet's needs, your family's needs, and the services provided by Setting Sun, but there's no obligation to schedule until you are ready.
Schedule a time for a peaceful farewell at your home when ready.
What does the in-home euthanasia process involve?
Home visits begin with getting to know you and your pet, including a basic behavioral assessment. Any questions you have about the process itself and aftercare will be discussed during this time as well. Once you are as ready as you can be the euthanasia process will begin. Once completed, you will have as much time as you need to say a last goodbye.
How do I know when it’s the right time to say goodbye?
This is a deeply personal decision. I'm here to support you and can help assess your pet’s quality of life, comfort level, and overall well-being. Phone or email consultations are provided at no charge. In-person assessments are also possible with a service fee. These assessments are focused on quality-of-life only, and not intended to diagnose conditions or recommend treatments. I do not have the proper diagnostic facilities to adequately serve as a 2nd opinion for health management.
Can you assist with aftercare or cremation arrangements?
Yes, I can provide aftercare based on your preferences, including private or communal cremation. We’ll discuss the options during our consultation.
Do you offer services for all types of pets?
Most of my service requests are for dogs, cats, and horses. Other pets can be considered with consultation.
What areas do you serve?
Our regular service area includes La Crosse, Eau Claire, Trempealeau and Jackson counties. Travel outside these counties is certainly possible, but may involve an extended-range service charge depending on schedule and mileage.
Can we bury our pet at home?
This unfortunately is not a simple answer. Regulations regarding home burial of pets vary by municipality, and improper burial potentially exposes local wildlife to the medications used for euthanasia. Instead I recommend cremation and burial of ashes. Horses and other livestock are a unique case, and we can discuss aftercare options during your consultation.
I was born and raised on a farm in west-central Illinois, and moved to the region in 2011 after graduating from Michigan State University. I currently live near Blair, WI with my wife and 2 boys. My career started in mixed-animal practice, transitioned to predominantly dairy service in 2015, and I opened Setting Sun Veterinary Service in early 2025. In-home euthanasia has always been part of my practice, and has consistently been the most appreciated service offered. I feel that providing cherished animal companions a peaceful end is undoubtedly sad, but also truly an act of grace. I also believe it is far kinder to allow these final moments to pass in an environment familiar to the animal, rather than in a clinical setting.
I feel fortunate that life has presented me the opportunity to continue offering this valued service while also taking a more active role in raising my 2 boys and managing our small farm.
